Cleaner stitches: how to troubleshoot puckering

Ripples around a design can come from several setup choices. Change one variable at a time and test on a fabric offcut.

Troubleshooting embroidery illustration

Check hooping first

Avoid stretching the fabric as you hoop it. Fabric that relaxes after stitching can pull around the design. Keep the fabric even and follow the hoop instructions for your machine.

Review stabilizer and density

Dense embroidery needs appropriate support. Match stabilizer to fabric and design requirements. A design digitized for a stable woven fabric may need adjustments for a lightweight knit.

Inspect needle and tension

Check for a worn or damaged needle and rethread the machine as instructed by the manufacturer. Test tension changes on a sample instead of the finished garment.

Know when to adjust the design

If setup changes do not resolve the problem, share the design ID, fabric type and a photo of the stitch-out with EMBfile on WhatsApp. The stitch density or underlay may need adjustment.
